ISLP Labs

A Quarto website that hosts handouts for the labs in An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in Python (ISLP), starting with Chapter 7 — Non-Linear Modeling. The handouts re-organize each lab as a sequence of exercises with hide-able solutions, so that students can attempt the steps themselves before revealing the worked code.

The lab content is adapted with permission from the source available at https://www.statlearning.com, and tracks the upstream intro-stat-learning/ISLP_labs repository.

Available handouts

R alternative

Students who prefer to work in R may follow the corresponding chapter of Emil Hvitfeldt’s ISLR tidymodels labs.

Original labs

The full set of original ISLP labs (Chapters 2–13) is available as Jupyter notebooks in the intro-stat-learning/ISLP_labs repository.

Building the handouts

Two parallel renders of the website are produced — a student worksheet (prompts only) and a solution key (solutions only) — each written to its own subdirectory of _site/. The exercise/solution toggling is provided by the coatless-quarto/assign Quarto extension.

Render the solution key (the default profile):

quarto render

Render the student worksheet:

quarto render --profile assign

The published GitHub Pages site combines both — its top-level index.html links to assign/ and solution/.
