UEPP 529: Urban Design Fundamentals
This course introduces students to the discipline of urban design by first briefly tracing some of the main influences, traditions, and fundamentals that shaped it. We then explore ways of seeing urban spaces, the role of the observer, elements of urban design, relations of power in urban form, lived spaces, and “other” spaces. The course also includes an introduction to methods in urban design, primarily in terms of site analysis and urban ethnographic methods. The course structure consists of lectures, readings, discussion, and applied exercises. Readings are posted weekly prior to class. You are expected to complete your reading assignments prior to class. Class time is dedicated to lectures, discussion, in-class exercises, and critique.
