GEOL 554: Magnetic Fabrics and Geologic Processes

Geology · 5 credits

Magnetic anisotropy in rocks, sediments, and minerals is the result of preferred alignment of mineral grains, and so can be used to study a wide range of geological processes that produce mineral-alignment fabrics. This course provides an overview of the theoretical background of magnetic anisotropy and allows students to learn and practice the laboratory protocols in the discipline. Emphasis is made in the use of magnetic fabric to understand various geologic processes including tectonic deformation, sediment transport, and magma flow and emplacement. It includes developing a research project to be presented in written and oral format.
