PHYS 344: Relativity

Physics · 3 credits · Physics and Astronomy

This course focuses on the special and general theories of relativity. Special relativity explores how physical quantities like time, space, energy, and momentum are perceived differently by observers in relative motion, transforming our understanding of space and time. We will discuss concepts such as time dilation and length contraction, and develop the mathematical framework of Lorentz transformations. General relativity, Einstein’s theory of gravity, reconciles Newtonian gravity with special relativity. The course covers the equivalence principle and explains gravity as the curvature of spacetime, with applications to topics like the physics of black holes.

Offered in 4 of the 26 listed terms (Fall 2021 to Fall 2026).
