MACS 397C: Science and Place

Marine & Coastal Science · 5 credits

Science and Place will develop proficiency in naturalist, field survey, and communications skills toward effective and respectful science collaboration with local organizations and tribes. Our focus will be on the habitats, species, and communities near WWU’s Shannon Point Marine Center. Successful scholars will be able to conduct field surveys and operate research equipment, have produced a field guide to marine species in five habitats and completed a collaborative, marine research and/or conservation project that helps a marine-focused community partner reach their science goals. Shannon Point Marine Center is on and neighbors two historic Samish house sites; we will be working on Samish land and will learn ways to work as allies with Coast Salish communities toward common goals of reciprocal stewardship.
