HIST 597F: Limits of History

History · 4 credits

Everyone has a history; everyone knows what history is. They know it has something to do with the past. The history or the historical past that everyone knows and talks about puts the historical discipline in a unique place. Historians benefit from the fact that the larger public has some sense of the history and the past. Historians also get challenged on what they know may not be niche knowledge. “History” as an academic discipline has its limits. In this course we explore what those limits are and how do historians/ scholars find ways to circumvent those limits using tools that are sometimes conventional, but sometimes not. From global history to local history, from witting about rivers and animals to writing on Hijras and Djinns, this course asks what methodologies help in defining and breaking the limits of history from within academia.
