GEOL 569: Cosmochemistry

Geology · 4 credits

Origin of the chemical composition of the Solar System; formation and evolution of terrestrial planets, asteroids, comets, and the Moon. This course will cover several topics, including nucleosynthesis (the origin of elements), nebular processes (e.g., condensation), planet formation and differentiation, the formation of atmospheres and oceans, and alteration due to impacts and space weathering. We will explore analytical techniques in geochemistry to understand these processes, such as major and trace element geochemistry, radioactive decay, and stable and radiogenic isotopes. Recent scientific publications in cosmochemistry and current models of Solar System formation and evolution will also be discussed.
