ESCI 551: Environmental Sampling and Analysis

Environmental Sciences · 5 credits

The complexity of the environment is a constant barrier to our understanding of the natural world and ways in which humans impact it. Any given sample taken from the environment is an intricate mixture of solids, liquids, and gases both biological and abiotic in origin. To quantify and characterize chemicals of interest, sensitive and sophisticated analytical tools and techniques are often required to study these analytes at low concentrations and amidst a background of interfering constituents. In this course, we will examine multiple facets of environmental analytical chemistry such as separations, extractions, and characterization of analytes of interest. In the laboratory, we will put these skills to use as we practice and employ their use in the context of environmental analysis. Those who successfully complete this course will leave with an expansive tool-kit of techniques and methods; as well as an understanding of the many instruments used in environmental science.
