EAST 499: Research and Writing in East Asian Studies

East Asian Studies · 5 credits

EAST 499 teaches students to write an original research paper in the broad field of East Asian Studies. Students will be systematically guided through the research and writing process by means of smaller benchmark assignments, in-class discussions, and one-on-one meetings with the instructor. Through an exploration of relevant primary and secondary sources, students will develop an original thesis in a final essay of approximately 25–30 pages. The last week of the course will be dedicated to presentations of student research in the East Asian Studies Student Symposium. Repeatable under different topics to a maximum of 15 credits, including the original course.
